Teaching Style

My teaching philosophy is simple: students who are having fun and making real progress stay engaged. That's why I teach using tablature and chords so your child is playing the songs they love from the very first lesson, making music right away.

Why Parents & Students Prefer My Lessons

01

At Your Home

No driving, no drop-offs, no waiting rooms. Tyler comes straight to your front door.

02

Built Around Your Schedule

Morning, afternoon, or evening — lessons fit your family, not the other way around.

03

No Experience Needed

Perfect for beginners. My students learn to play their favorite songs from lesson one to keep them engaged.

04

Progress Reports Every Lesson

You always know exactly what your child worked on and what to practice at home.

Why It Works

Most quit music lessons
within the first year.
Mine don't.

Most kids drop out because lessons feel like homework. Too much theory, too little playing, zero songs they recognize. Tyler's approach is built around the opposite: small wins, real songs, and a kid who actually looks forward to their lesson each week.

I teach utilizing tablature and chords so students are playing the songs they love from the very first lesson. Students who are having fun and making real progress don't quit!

Same Principles

Different Instrument

I spent years coaching youth soccer and hockey, working with both boys and girls. That experience completely shaped how I teach music today.

In sports, I saw that confidence builds skill, not the other way around. Young athletes don't improve by drilling fundamentals in isolation. They improve by playing the game, seeing themselves succeed, and wanting to do it again.

How it applies to music

When students learn through playing songs they love from day one, they feel like musicians immediately. They see progress every week. Real success builds confidence, which drives practice.

Clear goals, positive reinforcement, celebrating wins, and a supportive environment where kids feel safe to take risks. The same coaching principles that work on the field work in the living room.

Every student needs three things to succeed

Small wins every single lesson

No overwhelming theory. No distant milestones. Your child hears and feels real progress from week one.

Songs they actually love

When kids pick the songs, motivation takes care of itself. No more nagging them to practice.

You always know what happened

A written progress report after every lesson. What was covered and what the student should be practicing before the next lesson.

More Information about Music Lessons

Frequently Asked
Questions

Music runs deep in my family. My grandfather was the head craftsman for custom guitars at C.F. Martin Guitars, where he personally hand-built instruments for legends like Johnny Cash, David Gilmour, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Jimmy Page, and Elvis Presley. One of his hand-tooled custom guitars, personally requested by Elvis, is on display in the museum at Graceland. My father played guitar, bass, and banjo, sang in bands throughout his life, and was a student of Jorma Kaukonen of Jefferson Airplane. My mother played piano and nurtured my early love of music. I grew up surrounded by that legacy, and it shaped not only how I teach, but also my belief that parents can help spark a lasting love of music in their children and pass that joy on to the next generation.

The Science of Music & Learning

Give Your Child a Lifelong
Advantage Through Music

As a parent, you invest in everything that gives your child an edge — the right school, the right activities, the right opportunities. Music lessons belong on that list. Few extracurriculars deliver the kind of deep, measurable, lifelong benefits that learning an instrument does. And the earlier they start, the greater the advantage.

29%

Higher verbal memory scores in music students vs. non-music peers

More neural pathways formed when playing vs. listening to music

40%

Improvement in reading comprehension linked to music training

01Neuroscience

The Ultimate Brain Workout for School Success

Playing an instrument doesn't just build musical skill — it literally reshapes how the brain works. When your child plays music, nearly every area of their brain activates simultaneously, forging neural connections that carry over directly into academic performance. Studies consistently show that music students outperform their peers in verbal memory, reading comprehension, and spatial-mathematical reasoning. Those are the exact skills that drive success in school. Music also trains executive function: the ability to process multiple inputs, stay focused, and adapt quickly. That translates to better attention spans, stronger study habits, and sharper problem-solving across every subject.

02Psychology

Confidence, Resilience, and the Drive to Succeed

Academic success isn't just about intelligence — it's about mindset. Music builds that mindset from the ground up. Every time your child sets a practice goal and achieves it, they experience firsthand that effort produces results. That's not a small thing. It's the foundation of a growth mindset that will serve them in school, in college, and throughout their career. Beyond that, mastering a challenging piece builds a deep, earned confidence — the kind that shows up when they're presenting in class, trying out for a team, or stepping into any high-pressure situation. Music also gives kids a healthy, screen-free emotional outlet. Making music triggers feel-good endorphins, naturally reducing stress and anxiety so your child shows up to school rested, regulated, and ready to perform.

03Long-Term Outcomes

An Investment That Pays Off for Life

The skills your child builds through music — focus, discipline, creative thinking, emotional intelligence, and resilience — are exactly what colleges, employers, and life itself reward. You're not just signing them up for lessons. You're giving them tools they'll carry forever.
